Summer 2019 Book Roundup: A Review of Every Book I Read

One of my favorite things about summer is that there's no school, so you have plenty of time to do activities that you don't have time to do in the school year. I love to read, but I rarely have time in the school year. I read quite a few books this summer, so today I'm sharing a review of each book I read!

By Invitation Only // This book focuses on a young couple that is getting married, and each chapter alternates between the husband's mother and the wife's mother. Each mother has a very different life: one is a wealthy socialite, and the other has lived on a simple farm for her whole life. The mothers disagree on practically everything, but as the book progresses they begin to come together. I just made this book sound really cheesy and cliche, but I swear it's actually really good.

Rating: 5/5 stars

#GIRLBOSS // Written by the founder and CEO of Nasty Gal, #GIRLBOSS shares Sophia Amoruso's journey from listing thrifted items on eBay and stealing art supplies in order to pay rent, to becoming the founder of one of the most popular clothing companies today. It inspired me so much that I created an eBay account and began to list items the moment I finished the book.

Girl, Wash Your Face // This was the book that swept the internet this summer! I read this at the lake and I couldn't put it down. Rachel Hollis writes in a way that really speaks to you: in each chapter, she focuses on a different lie that women believe and shares personal anecdotes on how she stopped believing that lie. It's a fairly quick read and definitely worth your time!

Rating: 5/5 stars

I'll Be There For You // If you like Friends, you must go read this book. Right now. It's a detailed history of the tv show Friends, sharing stories from each cast member's background, to behind-the-scenes anecdotes of the show, to the challenges the crew had to overcome. It is such a good read for any die-hard Friends fan!

Rating: 5/5 stars

The Challenge Culture // This book, written by the former CEO of Dunkin' Donuts, has a great message: it talks about how major companies and corporations thrive off of pushback from employees; great companies create an atmosphere in which ideas are questioned and debated in order to make the company reach its potential. It's a great concept, but I honestly feel like the book dragged on and I feel like the whole concept could've been summarized into an editorial essay.

Rating: 2/5 stars

Hello, Sunshine // This book centers around a famous cooking show host who gets hacked, causing all the details of her upbringing and background to be revealed. She crafted her tv personality around a fake backstory, and now she must start over to rebuild her life now that the entire internet has deemed her a fraud. I read through this book very quickly, because it was so interesting and well-written!

Rating: 5/5 stars

Wolfpack // Similar to The Challenge Culture, I felt like this book had a great message but dragged on. It's a short, 100-page book written by former USWNT soccer player Abby Wambach, and it talks about how to be a leader on your team and unite your teammates. I loved her memoir so I was excited to read this, but it felt like more of a TED Talk transcript than a book.

Rating: 2/5 stars

Girl, Stop Apologizing // I loved Rachel Hollis' first book, so I really thought I would love this one! However, I felt that it wasn't as inspiring and emphatic as the first one. It still had a good message - stop apologizing for how you live your life and stop justifying every little action - but all in all, I preferred the first one.

Rating; 3/5 stars

The Summer That Made Us // I am currently in the middle of this book, but I absolutely love it! It's about a family that was once close, but a tragic event tore the family apart and sent every member in a different direction. Twenty years later, another tragic event brings the family back together. Again, I'm not finished, so I have no idea what happens, but the book is so well-written and captivating!
